Resin Driveway FAQs

Resin Driveway FAQs

Thinking about a resin driveway or patio? These are some of the questions Solid Ground is asked most often by homeowners across Hyde, Tameside, Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire.

What is a resin-bound driveway?

A resin-bound driveway is made by mixing decorative aggregate with resin before the material is hand-trowelled onto a suitable prepared base. The result is a smooth decorative surface with the stone fully coated and bound together.

Is resin bound the same as resin bonded?

No. Resin bound mixes the stone and resin together before laying. Resin bonded normally involves spreading resin onto a surface and scattering aggregate over it. Read our full resin bound vs resin bonded guide.

How much does a resin driveway cost?

The price depends on the size of the area, condition of the existing driveway, excavation, base construction, drainage, borders, access and chosen specification. See our current resin driveway cost guide for the main pricing factors.

Can resin be laid over concrete or tarmac?

Sometimes. A sound existing concrete or tarmac surface may be suitable for an overlay after inspection. Cracking, movement, contamination, drainage, levels and edge details all need checking first. Read our resin driveway overlay guide.

Can resin be laid directly over block paving?

We would not normally recommend using block paving as a direct resin base because the individual blocks and joints can move. The existing driveway should be assessed and rebuilt with a suitable continuous base where required.

What is the best base for a resin driveway?

There is no single base specification for every property. The correct construction depends on vehicle loading, drainage, existing ground conditions and whether the installation is permeable. See our detailed guide to the best base for a resin driveway.

Are resin driveways permeable?

Resin-bound surfacing itself is porous. The complete driveway is only genuinely permeable when the base and sub-base beneath it also allow water to pass through or when drainage is designed correctly for the site.

How long does a resin driveway last?

Service life depends heavily on the base, ground conditions, drainage, loading, resin specification, workmanship and maintenance. A well-built installation should provide many years of use. Read our guide on what affects resin driveway lifespan.

Do resin driveways crack?

They can if there is movement underneath, weak edges, unsuitable bases or other structural problems. Resin has some flexibility, but it cannot permanently hide movement in a failing base. Our article on why resin driveways fail explains the main causes.

Can you pressure wash a resin driveway?

Yes, provided it is done carefully. Use a fan spray, keep the lance moving and avoid concentrating a powerful jet close to the surface. See our resin driveway cleaning and maintenance guide.

Do weeds grow through resin?

Weeds should not normally grow straight through a correctly constructed resin surface from below. However, wind-blown seeds can germinate in dirt collected on the surface, around edges or in neglected areas.

Can resin be used for patios and paths as well as driveways?

Yes. Resin-bound surfacing can be used for patios, paths, garden areas and other pedestrian spaces when the base and detailing are designed for the application. See our resin patio service.

What colours are available?

There is a wide choice of natural, warm, grey, silver and darker aggregate blends. Borders can also change the finished look significantly. Explore our resin driveway colours and design options.

Can I see what resin would look like on my own driveway?

Yes. Send Solid Ground a photograph of your existing driveway and use our Free Driveway Visualiser to preview a possible transformation before deciding on colours and borders.

Do you cover Stalybridge, Hyde and the wider Manchester area?

Yes. Solid Ground works across Hyde, Tameside, Stockport, Greater Manchester and parts of Cheshire. You can see genuine local work on our Stalybridge resin driveway page and other location pages across the website.

How do I get a quote?
