What Is No-Fines Concrete? Resin Driveway Base Explained

No-fines concrete is an open-textured concrete that can form a strong, permeable base beneath a correctly specified resin-bound driveway. Solid Ground uses this type of base on suitable full installations across Greater Manchester.

Why Use No-Fines Concrete Under Resin?

Resin-bound surfacing can allow water through the gaps between the coated aggregate. Where a permeable build-up is required, the layers below also need to manage water. A suitably designed no-fines concrete base provides a firm continuous laying surface while its open structure allows water to pass through.

How Is It Different From Standard Concrete?

Conventional concrete normally contains coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, cement and water. No-fines concrete omits the fine aggregate, leaving interconnected voids between the larger particles. Dense concrete is generally treated as impermeable, while the open texture of no-fines concrete can allow water movement through the base.

What Goes Under the Concrete Base?

Our Type 1 vs Type 3 guide explains why the sub-base specification depends on the drainage strategy.

The concrete layer is only part of the driveway. A full installation starts with assessment of the ground, excavation and a suitable compacted sub-base. For permeable construction, open-graded sub-base material such as Type 3 may be specified. The exact build-up depends on ground conditions, vehicle loading and drainage.

Can Resin Be Laid Directly on a Granular Sub-Base?

A granular sub-base is not the finished laying surface for a standard resin-bound driveway. Resin requires a stable, continuous base suitable for the expected traffic and drainage design. Read our best base for a resin driveway guide.

Does Every Resin Driveway Need No-Fines Concrete?

No. Sound existing tarmac or concrete can sometimes be retained for a suitable overlay, and other properly specified base systems can also be appropriate. The correct approach depends on the existing construction, condition, levels, drainage and intended use.

Why Base Preparation Matters

The decorative resin layer cannot compensate for significant movement or failure underneath it. Poorly prepared ground, unsuitable construction, weak edges or a failing existing base can eventually show as cracking, settlement or drainage problems.

How Solid Ground Builds Resin Driveways

On a suitable full installation, the work can include excavation, compacted sub-base, drainage and level design, secure borders, a resin-ready base and the mixed and hand-trowelled resin-bound surface. The specification is adapted to the property rather than using one build-up everywhere.
